Chapter 28
Since their recent round of fighting, Lilly was never home. Despite this, Evan did not feel safe to venture out of the room for any significant amount of time until after about the third day she was gone. Venturing out, he sat on the sofa and turned on the television. Evan had not watched television in what seemed like years. His computer was accessible, but it was not the same. Browsing through the channels, he decided to check out the 24 hours local news channel, which primarily served the Bronx. Before he stopped watching TV, Evan had the unusual habit of checking the local weather report, even when he knew the temperature.
Wanting to find out if the weather had changed by a degree or two, he would constantly switch back to the local news, interrupting what he would be in the middle of watching. That night the routine was no different. While watching the news, the anchor relayed a story about a man who died after getting hit by a subway train. It was unclear whether it was a suicide, an accident or a deliberate murder. The man’s name was Drew Parsons. Then they flashed the unfortunate victim’s picture on screen. The picture seemed familiar to Evan, and he kept looking at it, trying to figure out the familiarity he had with this person. It then came to him.
“Oh my God!” he exclaimed. Drew Parsons was the man that evening in the church that was freaking out in front of everyone. He could not believe it. He was sure that it was him, there was no mistaking that. A flood of thoughts came into his head. Recalling the words that Drew was screaming that night, he remembered that he kept stating that his life was his and no one else’s, and that no one could say when it would end, among other things. Did Drew see something that evening?
He had to have experienced something intense, something real, considering the way he was acting after the demonstration was over. No one can say with any authority that they knew what he went through, but whatever it was, it was significant enough to make him snap. And now he was dead. From Drew’s death, Evan concluded that most if not all of the participants in the audience had to have experienced something. He chided himself for not staying around to find out if this was actually the truth.
As sardonic as it was, he thought all of this was very interesting. Drew dying had some impact in the sense that he had seen him alive at one time, and now he was dead. As tragic as that was, the death held more resonance to Evan in regards to what it represented. Drew’s death solidified that what Evan saw and did that evening was not mere imagination, but it was truth. He did not know Drew personally, but what he derived from Drew in death was exceedingly vital in his own personal quest. The death of Drew Parsons had now taken on a form of significance.
